Snowmobiling If you’re are looking for the best winter thrills ever, tap into the adrenaline rush of powering through pristine woods on a...
Used to be, Mainers waited impatiently until it got cold – nice and cold – until they hauled out their skates and headed out for their favorite pond, lake or marsh. Skating is big in Maine. Impromptu outdoor ice rinks are almost as common as snow plows and Christmas trees. People flood their back yards to build miniature hockey arenas and carefully snow-blow sections of their local lake.
It’s not just locals who can find great places to skate in Maine. Communities throughout the state have both outdoor and, increasingly, indoor ice rinks that are open to all. If the urge hits, you can thwack a hockey puck around a full-sized ice vault in July while your family goes surfing a few minutes away.
Here are some popular skating areas:
Penobscot Ice Arena, Brewer
Sugarloaf Outdoor Center, Carrabassett Valley
Maine Ice Vault, Hallowell
Town of Brunswick rinks, Brunswick
Family Ice Center, Falmouth
The Rink at Thompsons Point, Portland
