Maine's Kennebec Valley offers quite a bit for sportsmen and women of all types. There is almost nothing you can’t find to keep you busy. But there are few things to tack on to the list that you might not find everywhere.

With long stretches of deep green forest punctuated by lakes and ponds, our region begs to be explored from the air in a chartered plane. Several intrepid pilots have set up shop in places like Belgrade Lakes, Pittsfield, Augusta, Waterville, and Rockwood to give visitors a view from the top.

There are other ways besides boats, canoes, and kayaks to have a good time -- like jetskis for instance. Look out for these speedy little buggers on some of the bigger lakes around MonmouthBelgrade and up on Moosehead as well as on some of the nice wide flat stretches of the Kennebec River between Gardiner and Augusta.

On the other end of the spectrum, Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) has surged in popularity here in the Kennebec Valley. Anyone with a stretch of water that you can explore by boat, now seems to have a SUP concession, and who wouldn’t. It’s one of those sports requiring no prior experience and can be done all day long from dawn til dusk. Look to find a convenient concession around Belgrade, Monmouth, China Lake as well as Moosehead. And have a great time, the water is just fine.

Sticking closer to land, gun and hunting enthusiasts might want to spend an afternoon challenging yourself (and your friends) to a round shooting sporting clays. Make your way through the various stations which offer up a shooting challenge that simulates the unpredictability of live-quarry hunting, like a speedy rabbit moving swiftly through some high grass or high-arcing, crossing and inbound clays.

Alternately, you might try your hand at the fun of paintball. Take capture the flag and turn it into a modern military simulation, and this isn't just for the big boys anymore. New gear and ammo have been developed and are being used in the Kennebec Valley that take the sting out of the sport, so now the whole family can play along.
